Tallow Candles

Back in Middle Ages,  people would use tallow candles for light. These candles were made using fat of beef or sheep.  It was cheap and inexpensive. However, the smell from lighting tallow was really pungent and would smoke..  By the 13th century, chandlers (candle makers) formed guilds in England and France, supplying households with dipped or molded tallow candles.  While not common, today  you can still find places that make tallow candles. Over time tallow candles have evolved with better processes used to make tallow firmer to burn and less pungent.
